Make Gregory the $1000 frog!

iphone_cozy_gregory.jpg

More photos here and here

You're looking at a batch of Gregories, the froggiest iPhone Cozies around. As noted before, Gregory is a finalist in the Next Big Thing design competition at Fred Flare. There are 27 finalists in total, and they are being presented one a day at the Fred Flare Blog.

One of the designers will be awared a $1000 cash prize. As far as I know the voting will be on July 2 (I haven't seen the voting page yet), and the designer with the most votes will be crowned 2008’s “fred fan fave” and will receive the $1000.

Will you vote for Annamatic's Gregory? I will.

Her (tainted) milk

Compare my photo to that taken by Eleftheria, and you might bark at the difference. Why does HER MILK look rather smudgy in her photo, and smooth and glossy in my photo(s)? Which one is the real deal you might ask, and I'll take moment to answer that. This thing called skin is as good as you apply it:

Take your time
Transparent stickers are a bit tricky, because they're not air-permeable, like the vinyl material used for the other editions. Right after the sticker is put on, it can look tainted, because the enclosed air is reflecting light. What appears as dirty spots in Eleftheria's photo, are rather the textured spots, where the sticker is not fully attached on the surface. This effect will smooth out. After a few hours, you can see a difference, and again after a week or so. The sticker is a living thing: it expands and contracts in reponse to temperature variations and will attach more closely to the surface over time.

Avoid a bold stroke
Instead, rub the sticker on little by little, as this will avoid air bubbles.

Be strong
Use a cloth and some pressure. Pressure is good.

Leave your mark elsewhere
Touching the adhesive surface can leave your fingerprints visible. I write can, because the marks can fade out again over time. Hold the sticker on the edges with one hand and press it on with the other hand.

Aim low
In Eleftheria's photo, the angle at which the light is reflected gets right under the skin, exposing and exaggerating every mark there is. It couldn't have been much more unfortunate in terms of exposure. Believe me, it's not that bad.

Anyways, please keep the photos coming. I like to discover the user perspective of products as much as you do.

See /sticker_application for more advice on applying the decals.

Moody tags: gloomy, blue, peaceful, ...

moody_grid_emotions.jpg

Image based on Moody intro window.

That's my interpretation of the situation. Next to all the other metadata from which to create playlists, Moody's 4x4 grid offers an intuitive and fast shortcut to selecting songs.

I have written about Moody before. In some weird way, the simple looking grid seems to demand low cognitive effort. More probably though, there is lots of cognition involved, which is lubricated by the emotional response to color. To locate the energy level of a song in terms of your emotional response, there is a vast and complex relationship at work.

Ludwig van Beethoven:

Musik ist höhere Offenbarung als alle Weisheit und Philosophie. Wem meine Musik sich verständlich macht, der muß frei werden von all dem Elend, womit sich die anderen schleppen.

In the context of Moody, I consider a good tag to be one that doesn't get in the way—one that doesn't obfuscate the colorspot I initialy choose. Of all the things that a color, say red, can stand for, it can be either more specific than a word, or more generic, and therefore more flexible. Music is too rich to be subsumable under a single, lowly, word. Yet, the words are essential, as if I wouldn't be able to pinpoint a feeling (or to ensure that one exists) without them. Our emotions are enslaved by our brain.

I feel orange.

Nite Stories, exhibition, Warsaw

nitestories_391.jpg

Nite Stories consists of 11 acrylic paintings, capturing unusual and unconventional moments of young peoples' nights out. Aleosa will be at the exhibition opening on Thursday, June 5th 2008, to present her work. "I worked on the Nite Stories project for the last couple of months, and I'm finally ready to show it".

The images are based on photographs by Mark Hunter—thecobrasnake, who will be there, too. For this project, Aleosa used dark backgrounds offset by brightly coloured characters from Mark Hunter's photographs, giving them a mysterious touch.

The project is inspired and encouraged by Soulwax Nite Versions. Stephen Dewaele:

In a day and age where everyone takes digital pictures, posed in almost globally similar ways, posted instantly all over the web, it's refreshing to see someone adapt this world to canvas and blow up these little mini-observations of nite-life...

4 new designs for iPod Nano

her_milk_600.jpg

Two of them are Black Edition designs —they're printed on transparent adhesive foils.

Hope you like them!

Photo of GOLDEN CURRENT

trudell_gc_ipod_391.jpg

A larger version of this photo, taken by Margot, shows how the print merges with the background color of the iPod. This sticker is part of the super edition: It's an edition of one design so far, LOL. Super, because the color prints on transparent vinyl are translucent, not opaque.

These are rather experimental stickers. As the color used in this design is orange, you can imagine that this color will intensify, when the color of your iPod is orange as well. Likewise, when the color of iPod is green, this will also intensify the effect.

How do people feel, who shuffle music?

escape_shuffle_flickr.jpg

doubtful_shuffle_flickr.jpg

goddamn_shuffle_flickr.jpg

Granted, shuffling music is not much different from going linearly through music. An array of songs is always consumed one by one, whether you are a careless shuffler, a frequent skipper, a gapless album fanatic, a 400+ playlists junky, a constant rewinder, a grouping expert, or a singer-songwriter yourself. There are simply various modes of listening, of progressing through audio, of wading through emotional airwaves. The terms conflate in meaning and the question simply becomes: How do people feel, when listening to music?

The sticker is packaged

Gosh almighty! Packaging Shufflesome stickers is the most time-consuming part of order fulfillment. Each packaging is assembled by hand, and each sticker is packaged by hand. Packaging incurs costs, pushes the price higher, and is later thrown away. Still, i can't help myself; it's got to be right, different, more than a basic wrapping. There is a sense of obligation, slight insanity, and joy which makes me give more attention to it than would be necessary.

Sabine Groten photography at OMC Gallery

The OMC Gallery for Contemporary Art will be presenting photography works by Sabine Groten, as part of Portfolio, “an eclectic exhibition focusing on that part of the artists oeuvres, which has been dedicated to one special theme”.

Sabine, who made the BAD FACE SHUFFLE design for the iPod shuffle, about her work:

Different picture drafts, designs and developing arrangements as well as collages, based on photography, vector diagrams and sketches. Many works are on the basis of photographed selfportraits, which show me in a certain period of my life or document my everyday life. By my treatment of the Portraits at the computer the topic of the own person as well as my selections are resumed and manipulated. Thus this series of pictures based on the fusion of graphic-designs and photographic portraits contain a common component, which represents both elements partly with equal standing, as well as with new stress ratios and picture effects. Thus completely normal everyday life photos get a completely own and certain personal aesthetics, which are different with each picture.

Of daisies, glory and CIRCUS (chat with Vincent Fraser)

It's two days after i released two more of Vincent Fraser's designs into the wide open space. CIRCUS is one of them and it keeps floating back into my mind. I had to ask Vincent some questions about it.

SNB10342_465.jpg

SNB10343_465.jpg

Alex: The CIRCUS - with which element did you start composing this design?

Vincent: I usually have a rough idea in my head beforehand - then it’s a matter of gathering various elements together to use in the design. Once that's done I begin experimenting with different compositions until I'm satisfied with the result. So I guess I don’t start with any particular one element - it's more a combination of elements fused together, but if I was, it would be the background to set the mood of the whole illustration.

Alex: What was your rough idea that sparked into the bloom of CIRCUS? If you say it was no more than a mood, i understand, but was there more involved - an intention?

Vincent: Well, I wanted to create something that was quiet surreal and give the viewer something to think about - kinda like it’s telling a story I suppose. This was my initial intention so the clown and the field of vibrant orange daisies and daffodils really were the starting points followed by the vector tear drops in the foreground to give it that travelling Circus theme.

Alex: During composition, what entered onto the scene first - the clown or the owl?

Vincent: Definitely the clown :)

Alex: Does the owl carry the key to unlock the hidden treasures in the field of daisies?

Vincent: The owl is the surveyor of chaos, the herald of revolution and a more enlightened existence.

Alex: Chaos. Should this design be worn in protest to the day-to-day juggle?

Vincent: Is the day to day juggle something to be protested? or celebrated……it depends on the perspective of the individual.

Alex: What remedy do you recommend to conquer clownish misery in this world?

Vincent: Look for the beauty in everything.

Alex: A few days ago, Cirque Du Soleil launched the ONE DROP Foundation (onedrop.org). Isn't this amazing?

Vincent: I think it’s a great idea and I hope it will bring public awareness to the serious water issues around the world.

Alex: I think it's wonderful conceptually that the Circus - the arena of individual artistic expression - has been Cirque Du Soleil's starting point to enable such efforts from which we all can benefit. I hope i'll catch one of their shows.

Vincent: Oh definitely maybe we can go together - I think they open on January 6th 2008 at the Royal Albert Hall if your interested?

Alex: I am. I dream of a city with sideshows on every corner. Would you join me on a crusade to force municipal authorities to give up the streets to seriously funny people?

Vincent: I will be at the forefront with all the other graphic pimps!

Alex: Great, i'll bring the armor. By the way, do you juggle a lot?

Vincent: Without a doubt (lol) At the moment I'm juggling baby nappies with pantone colours!

Alex: Baby nappies ... thats's something else. Is this going to be an ad?

Vincent: Hmmm....an ad sounds good I'll bear that in mind.

Alex: When did you start designing?

Vincent: It’s been about ten years now in terms of digital art but if we include my whole design background then were looking at fifteen years at least. I originally came from an Interior Design background so the progression to digital illustration was a natural one.

My main goal is trying to use my experience and combine both disciplines to create something new - similar to what KinkyForm are doing at the moment.

Digital print technology is evolving so quickly it’s allowed new doors to be open for artists to present their work in many different formats never thought possible a few years ago.

Alex: That's right - and i thank you for enriching the Shufflesome collection with your art! By the way, i will be releasing yet another design with Vincent Fraser's art - next weekish.

Check out Vincent Fraser's portfolio at talentdatabase.com.

Olka Osadzinska exhibits at the brand new Nike Concept Store - Warszawska Nike - the first store like that in Warsaw, and the first in Poland. The grand opening is on the 5th of June, at 08:00 PM.

The name for Warszawska Nike is taken from the famous Warsaw monument - the Warsaw Nike (here is a photo, and there another photo, and here one more).

Jak Malowane: Picture Me
All drawings that will be presented are based on Mark Hunter's pictures. I bet there is going to be lots of fun with the girls series which Olka began to create in December 2006. I have seen a few images; which are in a way both candid and iconic. And rosy cheeks are a common feature.

She will be joined by Damien Vignaux and Nico Andre, two very talented French graphic designers.

Cécile Belmont - "Exploits et défaites"

Cécile Belmont
"Exploits et défaites"

04 - 14 avril 2007

recto

Communiqué de presse (PDF).

The exhibition "Exploits et défaites" of the Berlin-based French artist is to be seen in the Parisian Gallery "Jeune Création" until 14th April 2007. It brings together drawings and embroideries of war scenes and battlefield pictures, extracted from her body of works „Heroism, brutality, despair, friendship and death“ (2005-2006). How to get onto the thematic of war? How to commit onself? How to represent violence nowadays? Answering these questions, the meticulous embroideries and the light drawings clash with the brutal images of fighting soldiers, revealing the cruelty of conflict. The embroidered epics exhibit the slowness of their realisation - each stitch is one second - evoking the time of expectation, speculation and remembrance of the people waiting tirelessly for the return of the fighter.

The lowdown blow-dry

"Removal of the decal is extremely easy", says Flickr user grimstranger. "Warm the sticker using a blowdryer then peel it off by the corner. If the vinyl gets distorted, few seconds of blowdrying does wonders making it mint again".

As noted here, warming the stickers is indeed a good way to remove them, if you want to resue them. Then i guess, this photo shows the decals after removal, applied back onto the backing paper. Magic! They're removable, reusable (limited), reunitable, readjustable, redressable... remarkable! The world must be good, i am afraid.

Choosing artwork for Shufflesome stickers

Digg-style community-driven pump or dump activity on sticker designs could be awesome (No -it would be!). However Shufflesome does not host such a selection process, but rather a case-by-case review between artist and producer. If i like a design, i produce it. If you like it, you can have it produced. Either way, we keep eating sweets. That's how evolution has shaped us.

As a maker of graphics, grab the template, add your graphics, and shuffle well. That is what i would like to invite you to do.

Shufflesome unveils sticker designs for the new iPod shuffle

Here is a bag of sweets. Shufflesome pioneers a new line of sticker designs for the new iPod shuffle. The stickers will be available during the first week of December. You can pre-order now through the shop.

The cut-out of Shufflesome stickers is unmistakable by the frontside decal, which partially covers the button. The vinyl-material is flexible enough to "melt" onto the surface - almost like hot beeswax.

Photos (open in new window): ABSTRACT, DEVILESS, CHERRY BLOSSOMS.

Creating designs for the new iPod shuffle should be much easier now, since there are only two decals versus nine for the white stick-style iPod shuffle. Apart from being a great wearable iPod, I hope it's going to be the favorite music-player for artists to put their graphics on.

Shufflesome are Alexander Ebrahim Schneider and presently 32 contributing artists. Many thanks to Meaghan Kennedy at Orange Sparkle Ball, J-Paul Ioannidis at CABINE, and Massimiliano Panzironi at DolceQ for creating the first edition of 9 sticker designs.

Note to editors/journalists: For additional information and images for media, email to alex AT shufflesome DOT com or call at +49.221.1301828.

A homage to Canada, by Leigh Dehaney

KANADA FÜR ENTDECKER

"I think that biking, skiing, & canoeing definitly cover quit a bit of "discovery" in Canada. I also thought that the "gritty/exploration" aspect would translate well as mud splatters & scratches.. like the iPod shuffle has been everywhere you have."

On request by the Canadian Toursim Commission to portrait Canada as a country of adventure, this is how canadian artist Leigh Dehaney renders it. The design is available at Cleverwome.de (link to shop), a cooperation run by the Canadiam Tourism Commission.

Leigh, best known for his photographic work, is currently consulting as a graphic designer and free lancing as a photographer/cinematographer.

As you can witness in his Flickr stream, his works often capture uneasy, slightly contaminated worlds, the "side effects of a populated world". There are murals, industrial ruins, machinery, bits of constructive architecture. You will find aspects of the urban environment presented in a certain latent, fragmented form.

Leigh Dehaney will be exhibiting at the FotoFest 2006 - The Eleventh International Biennial of Photography and Photo-Related Art.

Andrew Georgiou is Australia's most established queer comic artist. Formally trained at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Georgiou worked in film production for some years, before leaping back into illustration. After headlining all illustrated work for Australia's biggest gay magazine, Georgiou embarked on creating his own queer comic strip based on gay animals and inspired by his lesbian dogs Chelsea and Hua-Hua. When not at his drawing board, Andrew enjoys heckling game show contestants from the privacy of his own home.

Mr Gisby’s Totally Gay Pet Shop is the biggest gay comic strip in print. Randall Gisby and his shop full of totally gay pets appear in print in over 100 cities in the world’s most widely read gay publications.

From it’s origins as gawky sketches and bent gag lines, these queer little creatures have made their way through the doggy door to become a cult hit comic strip and now a range of very bent merchandise.

Cross dressing gerbils, leather fetish gorillas, dominatrix chickens and poodles in drag, are just a few of the ingredients that have made Mr Gsiby’s Totally Gay Pet Shop what it is today. Disturbingly wonderful.

CHILL PILL & THRILL PILL

Linda Mai-Lotti (Location: Beaverton, Oregon, United States) is currently at work for Nike Apparel’s Advanced Innovation Team, where she designs elite athlete competition uniforms and advanced sportswear. Her previous work at Nike was dedicated to the design of bags, Niketowns, such as Niketown Chicago, Nike Women´s stores and the Sydney 2000 Olympics athlete lounge.

My great lesson there is about storytelling - how to communicate the innovation and technology in Nike products to consumers in a compelling and fun way.

Linda Mai-Lotti graduated in Architecture and Industrial Design. Prior to NIKE, she worked at IDEO. The design methodology at IDEO left a mark: Very user focused and holistic approach on social, environmental and human interaction of products.

Process:
My process always begins with research. So rarely I am the targeted user for my products. I learn as much as I can about the problems, likes and dislikes. The goal regardless of projects is always the same, how to make the experience better. That’s why I love the shufflesome stickers. It takes an ubiquitous object and makes it personal.

Sources of Inspiration:
My husband, Martin Lotti. He is the Nike Global Creative Director for Women’s Footwear. His most current released product is Nike Air Max 360. Having two Nike designers in the same household, we push each other to try new things and learn from each other’s area of expertise. Our 2 year old boy, Owen is also very inspirational. I learned through him the intrinsic human nature’s need for fun, laughter, and love. It distilles down the everyday complexities into something very pure.

Now, if that´s too much goodness for you, blame it on the sunshine.
